This roll is super random. It’s Kodak Gold 200 and its only 24 exposures. Honestly I’m not a big fan of the colors. I exposed it at 160 just to get a little more light and some photos look overexposed. I also got them developed in some random camera store in NYC so that might have a lot to do with my results. Maybe ill get them rescanned. I’m glad there aren’t any important photos shot on this roll. I mainly rushed through this roll just to see how I like the film stock. My buddy Nico gave me another roll so I’ll definitely try it again I just don’t know what application ill use it for.
Okay so I don’t know if I’m going to keep this naming scheme up but I’ve been exclusively shooting film lately so it works. So this roll is Kodak Ektar 100. After looking at these I freaking love this film stock. I metered at box speed… I think. I honestly cant remember. I just know I love the colors of this stock. The only downside is its 100 speed so I can only really shoot this film outside. Also the skin tones end up looking a little red. But its the perfect landscape film stock so that’s exactly what I tried to shoot on this roll.
So at this point before loading my second roll into my camera I’ve already got my first roll back and have a better understanding of how Fuji Superia 400 looks when you expose it at box speed. This film stock likes a lot of light so I end up metering for the shadows/mid tones in most photos and setting my light meter to 200 instead of 400. Overexposing by 1 stop really made a difference. I’m very proud of this roll and the way the colors turned out.
So I shot my first roll of film. I’m actually surprised they turned out the way they did. I guess all those years of shooting digital actually makes a difference. Although shooting film is way different than digital I’ve shot close to 10 rolls at the time of writing this. So I’ve got a pretty good handle on my specific camera and I do a lot of research before using a new film stock. But before I show you my work I’d like to talk a little bit about my camera and share a story. First of all the camera is great! My Leica M4 is mint condition and is such a joy to shoot. There’s this feeling when I hit the shutter button. At first I would kind of hold my breathe and hit the button and then feel this very satisfied feeling of relief even though I had no idea if the picture turned out. Kind of like a feeling of peace like “it is what it is”.
Now onto the story
This guy stopped me at HEB asking about my camera. He said “you don’t see many Leica cameras with a Sony strap!” I told him I just got it and didn’t want to drop it. (The sony strap was the only strap I had.) We got to talking for a little while in the hot parking lot. John was a professional photographer for 50 years. He asked me what kind of film I was shooting. I told him Fuji superior 400. He asked if I ever heard the song Kodachrome by Simon & Garfunkel. He told me he remembers shooting Kodachrome and how the colors were so accurate and lifelike. Then Fuji came around and said “accurate colors? Fuck that!” He asked me all sorts of questions about how I’m metering. Suggested I get a Luma pro light meter because they are dead accurate. Asked me if I was bracketing. I shook his hand and we parted ways. Only to realize I should have took a portrait of this guy. Rookie mistake.
Anyways onto the pictures. Ill include a short description for some but not all.
Today was a bit of an uneventful Saturday. Nothing crazy. Woke up, ate a bagel and got an americano at Press Coffee with Lauren. We don’t normally go there. The coffee was mostly subpar. The first picture below is of Lauren outside of the coffee shop smizing. After that I headed into work for a rehearsal/run through for our new run of show. That took up most of the day. My buddy Daniel hit me up while I was working and asked if I wanted to go climbing later. I’m always down to go climb with friends so I agreed! The climbing gym is called Armadillo Boulders and today happened to be the 1 year anniversary of them opening. So they had a bunch of live music and food and a lot of people there. I met up with Daniel, met his Brother Chris and his sister Elizabeth and climbed for a little while. Since it was the 1 year anniversary of the gym they held a climbing competition so I stayed and got a couple photos of that. After that I met up with my best friend Nathan and his girlfriend Kayla at my favorite wine bar Little Death. I’m sure I’ll post many more photos of this place in the future because I really enjoy drinking wine there with friends. That was my Saturday. Now I have to get some rest because Sunday means a 5am wake up and a 6am call time for work.
Hey. My name is Trent Garcia. The idea behind this blog is to document all the pictures that don’t end up on my instagram feed. Hopefully i will take the time to write a little about these photos and the experiences that go along with them. It seams somewhat appropriate to post a portrait of myself to put a face to the name. These photographs were taken earlier today on my Sony A7III with my new Leica Summicron 50mm F2 all manual lens. I normally shoot with the Sony G Master 16-35mm F2.8 and honestly most of the photos i post will be with that setup. But today i purchased the Leica 50mm because after months and multiple outbid Ebay auctions i finally bought a mint condition Leica M4 film camera. So as the anticipation starts to kick in i realize in about a week i will receive said camera and wont have a lens to use it with. So I begin to do some digging on the internet on what lens to buy. Somewhat overwhelmed i decide to call up my local camera store (The Camera Exchange) to see what they have. Turns out they have a few options so i quickly head out with only 45 minutes to spare before they close. Fast forward about 30 minutes after the store closes iv decided on the Leica 50mm. Its in really good condition despite how old it looks (made in 1953 based on the serial number) not to mention it ended up being a little cheaper than all the other lenses i was considering coming in at $449.95. Excited to try this new lens of mine i decide to buy an adapter for my Sony camera to get me through the week along with a few rolls of some Fujifilm Superia 400. That way as soon as i get my M4 i can start shooting. So i leave the camera store and head home just in time to catch the sunset. I somehow convinced Lauren (my wife) to walk over to my favorite sunset spot at The Pearl to try this lens out. Turns out manual focusing is pretty hard! I don’t know how many shots i took but only ended up with a few usable ones that were correctly in focus. I’ll get better at focusing i promise but these were the photos i ended up with.
